You may have noticed this already: A fragrance changes depending upon who wears it. That’s why it’s a good idea to test a scent on your skin before you purchase it.

This is why people tend to stick to the same fragrance when they find something that works.

This close relationship of your skin chemistry with scent occurs because you have your own unique personal odor that is yours alone. Your personal scent is as individual as your fingerprint.

Your sense of smell is one of the most “scents-ual” things about you.

It’s a way of attracting a partner, or at least flirting with them – in a “primal” sort of way!

The tiny glands that release this personal scent are scattered all over your body – in your face, nipples, anal and genital regions, armpits, ears, eyelids and scalp.

What causes all the “sniffing excitement” are strongly aromatic hormonal substances that these scent glands release.

Called Pheromones (Greek for excitement) they’re activated by adrenaline, the hormone that rushes through your body whenever you get excited, to fuel your excitement and also make you hyper-alert.

Pheromones go into swing when you reach puberty.

Women’s pheromones can affect the menstrual cycles of other women with whom they live or work – so that eventually they menstruate together.

Thanks to Pheromones, birth control may be only a sniff away. Scientists are currently working on an alternative birth control, by developing nasal sprays that regulates the menstrual cycle.

Because scent plays such an important role in the “mating game”, many elderly people find that they’ve lost the appetite for sex – do the fact that our ability to perceive smell decreases as we age.

After menopause or a hysterectomy, a woman’s ability to detect odors declines, unless she is taking hormones.

My Own Observations:

~Working so closely with scents – I have discovered that many women enjoy wearing a man’s fragrance and several men (if not too floral) enjoy wearing a woman’s fragrance. Maybe it’s because the fragrance invokes “scents-ual” feelings of the opposite.

~I’ve also noticed that “couples” enjoy selecting fragrances for each other, claiming that they are the ones who are going to be reminded of it.

~On a subliminal level, pheromones may be the reason why we like or dislike someone.

~Maybe pheromones are why animals sniff one another upon meeting!?!

All this research has led me to a very interesting understanding.

I guess there’s more to sex than meets the eye…

Bijan, whose full name is Bijan Pakzad, has been a major force in the world of fragrances since 1981 when he developed his first perfume for men. He further drew attention to his product when he offered his perfume in Baccarat crystal flacons that were signed and numbered. As a result, a 6 oz. Bottle of this perfume is now worth approximately $3,000.

After immigrating to the United States from Iran in 1973, Bijan wasted no time getting himself established in the world of fashion and design. In fact, by 1976, he had set up an exclusive boutique on the legendary Rodeo Drive. His store, which could only be visited by appointment, was considered by many to be “the most expensive store in the world.” Bijan still currently resides in Beverly Hills, though he also has homes in New York, Milan, and Florence.

Today, many of the most powerful men in the world can be seen wearing clothing designed by Bijan. His clients include President Bush, Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sir Anthony Hopkins, President Ronald Regan, Jay Leno, and Prime Minister Tony Blair.

In addition to his clothing, Bijan continues to create fragrances. His current line includes fragrances for both men and women. In both cases, he presents the fragrances in globally patented circular glass flacons that have an open center as well as a dividing web. When the fragrance is half full, the two chambers fill on their own accord by following the scientific principle that liquids seek their own level. His flacons are so intriguing that one is even featured as a permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute.

Bijan has won numerous awards for his efforts. In 1988, his Bijan for Men fragrance won the FiFi award for “Most Successful Men’s Fragrance” from the Fragrance Foundation. His Bijan for Women fragrance took home the “Best Women’s Fragrance Package” award that same year. His Michael Jordan Cologne won “Men’s Fragrance Star of the Year Specialty/Department Stores” in 1997 as well as “Best National Advertising Campaign – Men’s.” He also received the Ig Nobel Prize in chemistry for his DNA fragrance in 1995. He was also included on the “International Best Dressed List” by Vanity Fair in 1989.

One of the most dynamic businesswomen of the 20th century, Estee Lauder through focus and hard work created one of the world’s most recognized cosmetics brands. With a single-mindedness of purpose rarely encountered, Estee Lauder left behind her at her death a business whose products are today available in almost every country and which employs tens of thousands worldwide.

Born Josephine Esther Mentzer in Queens, New York in 1908, to father Max and mother Rose who were of Eastern European descent, she was trained in the selling of skin care products to local beauty salons and hotels by her uncle, John Schotz, a chemist with New Way Laboratories. In 1930 Estee (her nickname) married Joseph Lauter, the family changing their surname to “Lauder” later that decade.

Estee Lauder was a late bloomer. It was not until 1948, at the ripe old age of forty, that her legacy really was born. In that year, she used her sales skills to obtain a counter at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, where she sold her own skin care products. Counters at other well-known department stores such as Neiman Marcus soon followed.

Her first perfume product was introduced in 1953. Called Youth Dew, it was actually a bath oil that could also serve as a perfume, and it was an instant success with women, who purchased more than 50,000 bottles in the very first year. That success led to her opening Estee Lauder counters across America and in 1960 she entered the international market with Harrods department store in London, England.

There followed a series of product launches that would solidify the reputation of the Estee Lauder brand across the globe. These included Aramis in 1965 (a line of men’s fragrances and grooming products) and Clinique in 1968 (the first non-allergenic fragrance-free cosmetics brand). Her company also contracted to become the world-wide licensee for Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan fragrances and cosmetics.

Besides her relentless drive, her success was largely driven by her sales philosophy that held that in order to make a sale, it is necessary to actually make contact with and engage the prospective customer. In fact whenever her product line was introduced to a new retailer, Estee Lauder would show up to counsel the store’s staff on how to sell her products, and its customers on how her products could help them. As regards the latter, she stated that “in a perfect world, we’d all be judged on the sweetness of our souls. But in our less than perfect world, the woman who looks pretty has a distinct advantage and, usually, the last word”.

Two marketing innovations can be specifically attributed to her. After her success was achieved, she liked to socialize with the rich and famous, and would often give them sample of her products so that they could spread the word. More importantly, she introduced the concept of offering customers a free gift with every purchase of one of her cosmetics.

Estee Lauder continued to work for her company until well into her 80’s. By the time of her death in 2004 at age 97, her cosmetic company’s reach extended into almost every country in the world, earned billions of dollars annually and controlled almost 45% of the U.S. cosmetic market in department stores.

Prior to her death, she was the recipient of many awards recognizing her unique genius and her contributions to the American business landscape. These included being honored by the American Business Women’s Association as one of the 10 Outstanding Women in Business. And in 1998, Estee Lauder was selected by Time Magazine as one of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century. Not bad for the youngest daughter of nine children whose father owned a small hardware store in Queens.

Two business announcements this week reconfirm the unbelievable pace of change the world business climate is undergoing. Visionary fashion designer Liz Claiborne died and her Company announced that it would sell or close 16 divisions. And, pioneering retailer Leslie Wexner announced that his firm, Limited Brands, Inc. would put up for sale the Limited and Limited Express chains.

The nature of retail, like most other industries, has undergone radical change. Big box category killers like Staples and Best Buy have evolved into dominating international success stories. Tesco, WalMart and Carrefours offer enormous scale, one stop shopping unimaginable a generation ago. Specialty retailers such as Wet Seal, Aeropostiale, Abercrombie and Fitch, L’Occitaine and Talbots attack specific niches.

Consolidation, bankruptcy and liquidation have allowed fewer and fewer national department store and supermarket chains. Macy’s has consolidated nationally after absorbing numerous regional department store chains such as Lazarus, Bullocks, Burdines and Marchall Field. W.T. Grant, Montgomery Ward, AyrWay, Venture and Gold Circle are only a few examples of once strong groups that no longer exist.

The Limited began in 1963 as a single clothing store in Columbus, Ohio. Leslie Wexner saw an opportunity to create an amazing retail growth story by replicating designer clothing designs, mass producing offshore and selling tailored business clothing to the rapidly emerging population of female businesswoman. He became a billionaire by leveraging and extending The Limited to numerous additional store brands including Limited Too, Victoria’s Secret, Henri Bendel and Bath and Body Works.

Despite the huge past success of the ready to wear concept pioneered by The Limited stores, times change and Mr. Wexner reacted accordingly. Work patterns have changed, women’s fashion taste, always fickle and subject to unexpected trends, have become even more unpredictable. His decision to sell the chain is prudent and will result in a stronger Company with redeployment of assets and full concentration applied to faster growing divisions. The decision to spin off his alpha divisions may have been difficult from an emotional standpoint, but future success requires staying ahead of the curve and Leslie Wexner will always strive for maximum success.

Ms. Claiborne built her eponymous fashion house by creating high quality, suits and ready to wear that women loved for their cut, tailoring and detail, all the while keeping prices affordable. Though she had retired some years ago from active management, she and her husband remained involved in consulting on fashion direction for the Company.

Nevertheless, as always, things never remain the same in retail. Department store consolidation has enabled groups like Macy’s to create in house private label brands that produce much more profit than designer brands like Claiborne, Polo and Nautica can offer. As more store space is dedicated to private label store brands the designer labels have to reinvent themselves. In the case of Liz Claiborne, 16 divisions will be jettisoned and total focus applied to the namesake men’s and women’s brands, accessories, shoes and fragrances.

These are only two examples of successful, well managed, mature Companies adjusting to the business realities they confront. W.T. Grant did not react to change and died. Thousands of independent stores have not reacted to change and they no longer exist. Local and regional chains that did not adjust to market realities are gone.

Ice houses, barrel makers and bicycle manufacturers are non-existent today, though they thrived in the 19th and early 20th century. Dozens of auto manufacturers folded in the past century and the remaining “Big 3″ are in real trouble because they have not adjusted to market realities. Numerous airlines have failed, been through bankruptcy or been purchased by stronger, better-managed lines. Change is inevitable and is best confronted and embraced, not fought.

Every day in my consulting business we are introduced to people offering products, services and business opportunities seeking a way to successfully commercialize their offerings. Invariably, the dream of the entrepreneur is to secure placement in WalMart. Yes, the same WalMart so scorned by so many as a small business and small town killer. I often think that the people so opposed to WalMart would be proponents of home delivered ice instead of refrigeration if alive a century ago.

These Luddites can not recognize that WalMart is only the latest, most significant, agent of change. Does WalMart put mom and pop stores out of business. I contend they do not. Business owners that do not recognize the change that WalMart represents, adjust accordingly and create new services that offer real value for their customers do close. Failure is never pretty, but is usually accompanied by solid reasons and an unwillingness to change.

WalMart has spent billions of dollars trying to perfect a ready to wear clothing business. They have failed to date miserably. WalMart has grown a huge food business, however, traditional chains such a Kroger and Safeway are more profitable and growing faster. They have added organic food departments, exciting bakeries and deli’s and a much broader range of products than WalMart. They evolved, changed and keep a step ahead of WalMart.

Thousands of small, independent clothiers, florists, grocers, butchers, pharmacies and auto repair shops do compete successfully with neighboring big box retailers. They do so by offering goods and services that are highly targeted, providing better customer service, a faster shopping experience, customizing offerings, home delivery and personalizing the buyer/seller relationship. These successful small retailers do not like the big bullies, but they recognize reality, confront the changes they face and compete. They do not whine, sit idly awaiting disaster or quit. They work smarter and compete.

Change is coming, always. It is good. We all live better lives because of change. Our children will as well. If we do not embrace change we will be left behind to perish. This is true for people, companies, organizations and societies.

If you are not having a formal Easter dinner, why not plan a fun and entertaining Easter day outdoors? You can easily gather a large group of family and friends and have a great time celebrating Easter, all without spending a fortune. Here is my recipe for a simple and memorable Easter afternoon.

1. Gather at a park or someone’s home that has a large yard. Make sure there is enough space for little ones to run around, play games, and collect Easter eggs. Try and pick a central location if possible, to make it convenient for everyone. IF you are hosting this at a park, take their restrooms into consideration- you probably want to make sure they have some.

2. Send out no-fuss invitation that includes all the necessary details. Keep the invites simple by making a flyer-styled invite. Include all the info about the event (when, where, etc). You might want to consider making your time in the middle of the day that way others can still attend their traditional Easter gatherings wither in the morning or evening. If you are inviting a large group (and your EggStravaganza) will be outdoors, I suggest you include a “rain disclosure.” Just type something like “If it rains, the event will be cancelled.” This will prevent you from having to make tons of phone calls Easter morning should the weather not cooperate.

3. Skip the formal dinner and have a potluck instead. You can avoid spending a fortune by not doing everything yourself. Let family and friends know what you’ll provide (like the ham for example), and ask everyone else to bring a side or dessert. You can even note on the flyer for families to bring their own drinks to make it even easier for you.

4. A fun egg hunt! Easter would not be complete without little ones scrambling through the grass in search of plastic eggs. If you have a wide variety of children, consider having two different egg hunts so that the little ones don’t get trampled. Separating the ages will also allow you to make sure little kids get age-appropriate goodies in the eggs as well.

5. Games- Think egg toss, sack races, hula hoop contest…just keep it fun! Make sure to get the adult involved as well, they might be reluctant but they will all end up having a great time. You can even pair up children and adults with games like egg toss or relay races. Make sure to hand out age appropriate prizes after the games are over.

If you plan on making your Easter EggStravaganza an annual event like I do, ask each family to bring with them one package of un-filled Easter eggs. This will allow you to replenish your stock after Easter is over and you will be all set for next year’s fun! You can also get others involved by asking their input on fun and entertaining games and crafts to include.

Asking for marriage too soon will be a strain on the relationship. When meeting with his family, you can give them a good impression by being polite and sweet. That way they will accept you and you will stand a better chance at marriage.

There is a dirty trick to dating rich man. Try to give him lots of opportunities to buy you gifts. When going past certain shops you can exclaim at the items on display and look engrossed. Rich men, if not stingy, will not shun away from such gifts. That way, the girl will be one the winning side whether or not the relationship goes into marriage at the end of the courtship.

Madame Ricci established it along with her son, Robert, when they decided that setting up their own haute couture house was a lucrative business idea with many opportunities. Madame Ricci took the role of a fashion designer, while Robert was the one who handled the business, including the finances.

They started working with fabrics, creating their own lines of feminine designs. After a few months from inception, their business grew under the name Nina Ricci, already known to the fashion industry as one of the best producers of romantic and refined fashion pieces.

The success of Nina Ricci can be attributed much to Robert’s effort. In 1945, he came up with the idea of exhibiting the best dresses ever made. With the help of the President of the Chamber, Lucien Lelong, Robert was able to dress more than a hundred mannequins from forty prestigious couturiers in the whole of France.

Madame Gres and Balenciaga were even included in that exhibition held in Louvre, Paris. This fashion showcase is what allowed the designs of Nina Ricci to reach other areas of Europe and even the United States.

After a few years of success, Nina Ricci began offering a line of luxury perfumes for the affluent. Robert was the creator of these fragrances, and he created this new line of products just to cope with the company’s expansion.

The first perfume made by him was named Coeur Jolie, and this was followed by another, the L’Air du Temps. This latter fragrance is the one considered by most consumers as the most delicate. It even remains as Nina Ricci’s top seller until these days.

The Coeur Jolie, on its first release, was valued not just for the delicate scent it emits but also for the great packaging that Nina Ricci has made. The perfume was contained in a crystal bottle that is frosted. The bottle was crafted by Marc Lalique and it features illustrations made by Christian BZrard.

This fragrance is made of sweet smelling flowers, the one that sets Nina Ricci apart from the rest of France’s creative perfumery. The L’Air du Temps, which means “mood of the times”, became France’s most classic perfume product ever created.

In 1959, new designs emerged then bringing Nina Ricci to new heights. The house acquired an international honor mainly for the success of one of its new collections, the Jules-Francois Crahay. This line was consolidated a few years after by GZrard Pipart, who took the new management over the haute couture studio in the year 1964. That same year, the L’Air du Temps was distributed and marketed not just in the whole Paris, but also in the major markets in the United States and Japan.

The perfumes of Nina Ricci continued to develop even after the death of Madame Ricci in 1970. The company was then considered as the leading exporter of fragrances in France. The production was even increased with the establishment of Ury Perfume Production Center where the known Farouche perfume was formulated. The company made several other fragrances, and this production is expected to increase with more and more people and technologies now being used for better results.
